magnetic attraction

The beauty of the Lake District is its colourful tapestry of nature, culture and history. Our particular patch displays a special charm.

At Near Sawrey, not, not far away, is Beatrix Potter's former home Hill Top, owned by the National Trust and open to the public. By the shores of tranquil Coniston Water, is Brantwood, John Ruskin's residence with museum, gallery, gardens and one of the most spectacular panoramas in the lakes.

Close by, we have some magnificent hills to ascend - Coniston Old Man, Weatherlam and Latterbarrow, all provide breathtaking views. Grizedale Forest, a woodland wonderland, offers 9,000 acres or waymarked walks, cycle paths and sculpture trail.

You only have to step outside our front door for a wander amongst Hawkshead's winding streets, whitewashed cottages, where no cars are allowed. There may not be a slate behind the bar but there are stacks of it composing the roofs and walls of our medieval village - from which, the local wool was ferried across Lake Windermere to be woven into Kendal Green cloth. As we said, ours is a rich tapestry.
